At Canyon Zen we fell in love with the following natural shampoo and wanted to share it with you.

Most shampoo strips the hair of its natural oil which is why wax conditioners are needed. If you are using generic brand names or a non-natural shampoo and conditioners, switching to a natural shampoo may require up to 3 weeks noticing a difference in your hair. That’s how long it takes to remove residues of previously used wax conditioners, fillers and other chemical ingredients in the hair shaft. The natural shampoo recipe below does not strip your hair of its natural oils, which helps to keep your hair healthy.

Using the following shampoo, you will also need to make the rinse to help rebalance the Ph level in your hair which we provided the steps below. The hair tonic massage is optional; although we love using it after the final rinse which helps keep the hair in place and we do not blow dry our hair either to prevent damaging it.

For the shampoo you need:

  • 1/2 cup of Castile soap – (We love Quinn’s Unscented Castile Soap).

  • 1/2 cup distilled or filtered water

  • Mixing bowl

  • An old shampoo bottle or any other safe BPA-free bottle or silicone.

How to make:

  • In a mixing bowl combine the castile soap, the water and mix gently until well combined.

  • Pour the shampoo into the bottle.

How to use:

  • Do not shake the bottle; it will get the soap to foam, instead flip the bottle upside down a few times to mix the ingredients.

  • Wet your hair and pour some of the shampoo into your hand. Massage your scalp and wash your hair. Rinse and if necessary, repeat. It requires a small amount of shampoo since it is concentrated.

  • When you have rinsed your hair of the shampoo, use the rinse below to rebalance the Ph since the shampoo is alkaline and will also help to untangle your hair.

To make the rinse you need:

How to make:

How to use:

  • You are going to need 2 bowls; one to mix the rinse and the other to catch the drips since you have to rinse your hair twice.

  • In a bowl mix 2 cups of warm or cold water and 30 ml (2 tablespoons) of the rinse mixture. You can always add more of the rinse mixture if your hair is not soft enough.

  • Pour over your hair while using the other bowl to catch the drips. Repeat at least two more times making sure to rinse the back of your head and the sides. If you have long hair, you can soak it into the bowl but rinse your scalp as well. Keep it in your hair, no other rinse necessary. Fan your fingers and shake your hair to remove excess water and massage scalp.

  • Dry your hair with a towel, avoid air drying.

  • If desired, follow by the hair tonic below.

Hair tonic (optional):

How to use:

  • If using the tonic after your hair is wet, fan your fingers and shake your hair to remove excess water. In your hand, pour 5 drops of Canyon Zen Hair Health or Rosemary, gently rub your hand together enough for the oil not to drip, and massage scalp and hair. Let it dry.

  • You can also use the hair tonic with dry hair; it can actually help keep it in place.

Enjoy your new hair treatment!
