The fizzy utility balls are a great way to use essential oils to clean and refresh your garbage disposal and also to clean your toilet bowl, and are very easy to make and yet so useful.

Fizzy Utility Balls

Makes 10 balls of 4cm each (1.56 inch)

You will need:

1 rounded cup baking soda

½ rounded cup citric acid

1 teaspoon of liquid soap

15 drops of essential oil of your choice

¾ of a ¼ teaspoon to a full ¼ teaspoon of water

Fizzy ball molds

Mixing bowls

Spoon

Parchment paper

Food Plastic Wrap

  1. In a mixing bowl combine the baking soda, citric acid and mix well. Make sure to add rounded cups, it will matter when you are down to the last ball, otherwise you will come short.

  2. In another bowl, mix the water, the soap and essential oil.

  3. Slowly mix the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix well and quickly so the citric acid does not fizz. You can also mix the blend by hands instead of a spoon to make sure it is well mixed.

  4. Test the mixture, it should not be wet or humid, it should still be mostly dry. Take some of the mixture and put into one of the halves of the mold and get it out into your hand. Does the mixture holds? If yes, then you can continue. If not, add few drops of water, the less water the better. If you have too much moisture or humidity, add more baking soda, otherwise it will be difficult for the fizzy ball to come out of the mold, and as they dry they will lose their shape.  When the fizzy balls are correctly made they harden within minutes.

  5. Now that the mixture is ready, get the mixture into your mold. Fill each side of the mold with the mixture and press firmly. Add a little extra to the top of the mold and press both halves together until they almost touch and remove the excess. If you have added too much powder, you can twist the halves to shave the extra. When the two halves almost touch, hold the mold firmly for about 20 seconds.

  6. Gently remove one halves of the mold, gently holding the fizzy ball in your hand remove the other halves.

  7. Place the ball on the parchment paper to dry for 24 hours.

  8. To keep the fizzy ball fresh and to prevent the essential oils from evaporating, wrap each ball individually in food plastic wrap.

  9. To use, unwarp the ball and drop a fizzy ball in the toilet bowl, let it fizz and clean with a brush. For the garbage disposal, put a fizzy ball, plug the sink, fill it with hot water and remove the plug. The ball will fizz and clean the disposal.

  10. You can reuse the food plastic wrap for future fizzy balls.
