Aromatherapy and Benefits

Essential oils were used by the Roman, Greeks, Chinese and Egyptians, and were popular throughout Europe. Egyptians were master in the craft and used essential oils as perfumes and also for the mummification of their dead using Thyme essential oil which was discovered in tombs. The bible mentions and references the use of Myrrh and Frankincense often, and was the gift given by the Three Kings and those oils were considered very valuable, even more than gold and were used in trades.

In later times in Europe, the oils were used once again as perfumes versus the chemical ones used nowadays, and were used to treat ailments. There are books written by doctors and researchers, how they used essential oils to even care for wounded soldiers, books such as Gattefosse’s Aromatherapy (written by Rene-Maurice Gattefossé) and how he discovered the use of Lavender to cure a chemical burn he got to his hand after his laboratory exploded, and The Practice of Aromatherapy (written by Jean Valnet, MD) which are really good read if you want to know the wonder of essential oils.

Essential oils are still used to this day, although not vastly as it was in the past, some of the practice got lost and was rediscovered in early 1900s by Rene-Maurice Gattefossé who coined the word Aromatherapy, which the practice reached the United States in 1950.

As of 2016, according to the National Institute of Health PubMed database, there are currently 17,277 medical studies on essential oils, many proving their therapeutic benefits. Essential oils have been used to support the body, mind and spirit since before the time of recordkeeping. They were long looked upon as sources of healing, and they were highly prized and valued. After all, the practice of aromatherapy is to aid in relieving and balancing emotions through natural scents. As we know, scents control our mood, thought, respiration, feeling, hormones, movements, metabolism and resistance to illness. The greatest benefit of the scent is their ability to restore harmony to our bodies. Take a walk in nature and we usually feel rebalanced, energized, we can feel the stress melting away, and that is due in part to the scent that is in the air from the plants and trees around us.
